Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

At Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, we aim to keep diversity, equity, and inclusion at the heart of our philanthropy. Together, with grantees, associates, and communities around the world, we strive to transform systems to help create more equitable opportunities for all.

Walmart’s culture extends to its philanthropy. Based on basic beliefs - Values of Service to the Customer, Respect for the Individual, Strive for Excellence and Act with Integrity – we aim to live Walmart’s culture each day.

In addition to Walmart’s values, the Walmart.org team recognizes our work with grantees is a significant part of our impact. They are among our most trusted partners. Our commitment to our grantees is that we will act with integrity, provide clear and consistent communications and be responsive. In addition to our work with individual grantees, we aim to build connections that can accelerate systems change. In several of our funding areas, we form communities of practice with grantees and leaders, seeking to share learnings and advance best practices in the field, fostering collaboration and improving our collective impact.

Embedded within Respect for the Individual is a deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation believe diversity, equity and inclusion are vital elements of everything we do. We are on a journey to live this through our daily actions and our investments. In each of our giving portfolios, we aim to invest in equitable outcomes. In strategy development, we study outcomes for underrepresented groups and the specific barriers they face. Addressing these barriers becomes a lens we apply to both individual investments and the overall grant portfolio. Examples include working with our grantees to design smallholder farmer investments to empower women, encouraging development of culturally relevant nutrition education programs through our healthier eating initiatives or advancing and diversifying technology and retail talent pipelines in our communities by investing in pathways for underrepresented populations.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have also committed $100 million over five years to create a new center to address systematic racism in society head-on and accelerate change. The center will support philanthropic initiatives focused on the social determinants of health, strengthening workforce development and related educational systems, and criminal justice reform with an emphasis on examining barriers to opportunity faced by those exiting the system.
