A store employee in a blue vest helps a customer by showing information on a handheld smartphone device. They are standing together in a grocery aisle with fresh produce visible in the background. The interaction appears friendly and supportive, suggesting customer service and in-store assistance. The environment is bright and organized, emphasizing a modern retail shopping experience. Creating Opportunity

Creating pathways to economic mobility.

Retail is a people business. Frontline workers are building careers and developing new skills as technology, employer needs and the nature of work change quickly. Yet too many workers face unclear pathways to advancement, while employers struggle to find the skills they need.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation's goal is to help more workers access opportunity, build economic security and advance over time. Our philanthropy is focused in the US and builds on Walmart’s long experience creating pathways for associates by investing in the systems that connect people to skills, quality jobs and career growth. We bring together employers, educators, workforce organizations, local leaders and workers to better understand where work is headed and turn that insight into practical solutions.

We focus on two connected workstreams:

  • Place-based workforce development
  • Workforce system transformation

Together, they aim to help communities build more dynamic, inclusive economies—and help workers and businesses adapt and thrive as work changes.
